Response to Recent Scientific American Article

I read with great interest the article entitled: A Global call to Action on Chronic Diseases by Christine Gorman. Ms. Gorman cites possible causes as to why cancer rates have increased in developing countries. She included adoption of Western society type diets. If you look at the specific cancers that have increased in almost every country, breast and prostate cancers lead the pack. Western diets have consistently been to blame for increased cancer incidence in developing countries. What could be the specific components of a Western diet that cause an increase in hormonally sensitive cancers? It seems obvious that we should look at hormones. What foods contain large amounts of the hormones associated with development of these cancers? Of course, it is dairy and its' increased consumption parallels the increase in these hormonally sensitive tumors. Dairy is loaded with the essential components necessary to cause these cancers: estrogens and insulin-like growth factor one.- Robert D. Bibb, M.D., Myrtle Beach,S.C.

MY GERMAN PATIENT

My patient who is a German citizen was in the office the other day. Of all the urologists with whom I share patients, this man's urologist in Germany is the only one to request further information. I am now 30 out of 32 men with prostate cancer with a biopsy score of Gleason 6 or less with the cancer disappearing on a complete dairy free diet as the only treatment. Our government knows what is going on but refuses to acknowledge the dangers of dairy consumption. P.S. I did send a book to Dr. Oz but have not heard back from him. This is typical of the medical establishment.

You Have Got to be Kidding!

In response to an article from McGill university about the safety of skim milk because" it is free of hormones." I sent this e-mail to one of the professors at the Office for Science and Society.

Dr. Schwarcz: I recently read an article from the Office for Science and Society on Milk, Hormones and Cancer. There were some errors in the discussion that I wished to correct. First, the most abundant estrogen in cow's milk is estrone sulfate. It is a water soluble estrogen and is most plentiful in fat free and skim milk and their derivatives. When consumed, it is deconjugated and converted into estrone . Estrone further induces a cytochrome p450 enzyme known as CYP1B1. CYB1B1 converts estrone into 16-alpha hydroxyestrone. This is a very dangerous estrogen that is both pro-inflammatory and carcinogenic. Encouraging people to believe that milk is safe and that skim or fat free milk is free of estrogens is both incorrect and dangerous.-Robert D. Bibb, M.D. Author of Deadly Dairy Deception.

Now The Germans Know

One of my patients who is from Germany and has a home in the U.S. recently told me he was diagnosed with prostate cancer. His PSA at diagnosis was 5.5. I told him that he should immediately rid himself of all dietary dairy related foods and suggested vitamin D at 4,000 units per day. He went back to Germany for surgery. His urologist checked his PSA since it had been over six weeks since the initial biopsy diagnosis. His PSA had dropped to 0.9. They waited fro six weeks again and repeated the PSA. The PSA was now 0.09. His urologist felt that his cancer had likely resolved. They wished to contact me to get a copy of my book and recommendations. I have
obliged them. The known success rate with early cancer resolution has now moved to 30 out of 31 with a dairy free diet and vitamin D.-Robert D. Bibb, M.D.

Epigenetics Again!

Remember in an earlier blog I talked about how gene turn-off of protective genes by dairy related hormones and proteins (IGF-1 and estrogens) likely causes cancer of the breast and prostate? The process is called epigenetics.

In the August 2010 issue of Scientific American on page 23,author JR Minkel talks about work of an early 2000s geneticist known as David Matin. Martin proposed that if genes protecting against cancer were turned off by the methylation process (epigenetics) that cancer might result.

He was right! It is happening. Let's wake the National Cancer Institute up and start warning people about the dangers of dairy consumption.-Robert D. Bibb, M.D.

Stop the Estrogen Tidal Wave by a Nuisance Vine

I talked in earlier blogs about how 16 alpha hydroxyestrone(16alphaC) is formed from the ingestion of estrone in dairy products. I warned you that this estrogen (16alphaC) was likely responsible for the carcinogenic effects of dairy products on breast cancer, prostate cancer and ovarian cancers. I further reminded you that a substrate induces its enzyme. In our case estrone causes an enzyme called CYP1B1 be be manufactured and 16 alpha hydroxyestrone is created. This is the body's attempt to get rid of estrone. The unfortunate result is the creation of an estrogenic compound (16alphaC) which likely causes cancer. 16alphaC is also very inflammatory and may play a role in autoimmune disorders such as rheumatoid arthritis.

Although the greatest source of estrogens causing cancer is certainly from dairy there are other sources. Estrogen is in our water supply from agricultural runoff from animal urine and feces. Women and men urinating natural estrogens into the sewer system or those taken as birth control pill eventually find their way back into the water supply.

Other than stopping dairy, how can we protect ourselves from the tidal wave of estrogens entering our bodies?

The answer lies in a nuisance vine called Kudzu. It was imported to control erosion of our soil but now chokes out native plants. It is the sinner that may become a saint. It contains a chemical that stimulates an enzyme called CYP1A1. This enzyme converts estrone into an estrogen called 2 hydroyxestrone(2C). This enzyme competes for estrone and converts it into(2C). 2C blocks the effects of 16alpha and effectively decreases the chance of getting cancer. It can be taken in capsule form. I advise 4000 mg a day. It is likely to have positive benefits in those already suffering from cancer.

Book Signing

I will be signing and talking about my book at Barnes and Noble in Wilmington, North Carloina on July 31, 2010.

The Diaper or the Diet

As the evidence mounts that dairy consumption causes the cancers of the prostate and breast, a person must make a choice as to what they may do:

1. Continue to eat dairy or run the risk that surgery may leave them incontinent, requiring the use of a diaper.

2. Continue to consume dairy and run the risk of losing a breast.

3. Worry about the return of these cancers by continuing the use of dairy products.

Pendleton in Paris

One of my colleagues has posed a question about acne. My work on dairy and cancer was inspired by the work of Dr. William Daby. Dr. Danby holds an associate professorship at Dartmouth Scholl of Medicine and has wriiten about the negative impacts that dairy have on acne. Since Dr. Danby's lecture almost ten years ago, I have advised that all my patients seeking tretment for acne, consider disconuing dairy consumption In some patients,it has resulted in complete clearing and in others some benefit has resulted.-Robert D. Bibb, M.D.

Sixteen Alpha Hydroxyestrone

This estrogen deserves its own private blog. I will give homage to this killer estrogen. I mentioned in a previous blog entry that 16 alpha hydroxyestone is derived from estrone through the conversion enzyme CYP1B1. This enzyme has been found in high concentations in prostate and breast cancer tissue. It becomes active when stimulated to develop in increased quantities by its substrate (estrone). Although estrone is made naturally in the body of men and women it is contained in very high amounts in water soluble dairy products ( fat free dairy products).

What makes it such a dangerous estrogen is the fact that it binds to estrogen receptors alpha (bad) and it binds in such a fashion as to almost never dissociate from this receptor. It is a major stimulant of cell growth and is likely the estrogen of concern in causing cancer of the breast, prostate and ovaries.

Now let me tell you a very interesting and true story. A major university respected for the quality of its faculty and research production performed a study in Mongolia. Teenage men and women wer given certain quantities of milk over a one month period. These test subjects were chosen because they almost never consume dairy. All known estrogen levels in blood and urine were measured before and during the milk consumption test. These researchers were about to write a paper concerning their results. I became involved when a friend of theirs and mine called me and expressed concern that they may have misinterpreted their data. My friend arranged a four way call between these researchers, myself and my friend and an estrogen metabolite expert retired from this same prestigous university. The two researchers were about to claim that dairy was safe because the blood levels of estrone dropped in the test subjects during the course of the study. I had examined their data with their permission and realized that they had made a critical error in interpretation of their data. Although the estrone levels had dropped, the 16 alpha hydroxyestrone levels had increased dramatically. It became immediately apparent taht the estrone dropped because it had been converted into the very dangerous estrogen: 16 alpha hydroxyestrone. The retired estorgen metabolism PhD agreed. So their you have it, when humans consume milk, they convert the dairy estrogens into a carciogenic estrogen.

16 alpha hydroxyestrone has also been implicated in the development of autoimmune diseases. What a nightmare!

A person can help their autoimmune diseases by stopping dairy consumption and consuming Kudzu. Kudzu stimulates an enzyme called CYP1A1 that converts estrone into a "good" estrogen known as 2-hydroxyestrone. Start your path to better health. Stop consuming dairy now! Get to the health food store and buy Kudzu capsules. Take 1000 mg ,four a day.-Robert D. Bibb, M.D.

Dr. William Harris

If you have read the book Deadly Dairy Deception you would know that Dr. William Harris in Hawaii has analyzed cancer incidence in countries where data collection can be assumed to be reasonably accurate. Dr. Harris has looked at the incidence of different cancers and plotted them against pounds per person of dairy consumed. The results indicate that the following cancers are heavily associated with dairy consumption and are ranked in the order of their association:

1. Leukemia and lymphoma
2. Ovarian cancer
3. Prostate cancer
4. Breast cancer

FOR JIM, A DOUBTING THOMAS

DAIRY AND DISEASE

ACNE: Dr. William Danby who is an adjunct professor at Dartmouth Medical School has shown that dairy products negatively impact acne. The acne is likely mediated through a chemical known as IGF-1. This is a growth factor that exists in dairy products and has been implicated in acne development and cancer.

CANCER: My work outside the office has centered on how the high levels of estrogens and IGF-1 contained in dairy products are producing the epidemic of breast and prostate cancer. I have had men with early prostate cancer and enlarged prostates that have reversed their disease on total dairy avoidance. Fibrocystic disease of the breast has disappeared in most women on a dairy free diet. The cancer development is likely caused by an imbalance in the ratio of good to bad estrogens. Bad estrogens are produced in response to the large amount of estrogens ingested in dairy. Good estrogens can be produced by daily ingestion of broccoli or whole soy products. Kudzu ingestion can have a similar impact.

AUTOIMMUNE DISEASES: These diseases include psoriasis, lupus, rheumatoid arthritis and other diseases in which the body “attacks self”. There is evidence that patients with these diseases have up to 10 to 16 times higher levels of the bad estrogens compared to individuals who do not have these diseases.

A dairy free diet includes eating nothing made from cows. This would include beef, milk, cheese, ice cream, yogurt and butter. Anything containing these products should be avoided. In addition one should become a label reader and avoid whey and casein which are condensed dairy proteins which are used as “food glues.”

For additional information go to the web at: www.askdrbibb.com

Vitamin D3: Vitamin D3 is the active form of vitamin D. The deficiency of vitamin D3 puts a person at risk for osteoporosis and increases the risk for cancer development. The dose for women after menopause who are not in sunlight is 2000 units per day or higher. If you are in sunlight more than 15-20 minutes per day this is probably adequate but you might want to have your level of the vitamin checked. This vitamin can be purchased without a prescription. African-American persons or those with naturally dark skin may be at particular risk of low levels of D3 because their dark skin prevents absorption of the sunlight that generates this vitamin. Dr. Bibb or your health care provider can be consulted regarding a prescription to have your levels of vitamin checked.

ALTERNATIVES TO MILK: Soy Silk milk ( do not take if on Temoxifen or other estrogen blocking agents used to treat breast cancer), Rice Dream and Almond or Coconut milk.

GOVERNMENT,GRIEVANCES and FAILURES

I told you that tonight I would talk about my on going effort to get some one at the government level to recognize the problems with dairy as it relates to cancer and at least look into the problem. Here is what I have done to no avail. I have sent copies of my books to almost all members of the black caucaus in Congress because African-Americans suffer 1.7 times the risk of prostate cancer as whites. I did not receive a single reply. I sent Robin Roberts a book because of her battle with breast cancer. I did not receive a reply. I sent Christina Applegate a book. It was returned unopened. I sent Senator John Kerry a book because he had prostate cancer. I received no reply. I have sent a copy of my book and a copy of the "rat study" to the director of epidemiology at the National Cancer Institute who told me it was too premature to draw conclusions about the association of dairy and prostate cancer. On my return receipt e-mail to this man regarding a copy of the rat study ( on the blog), I received no reply. I sent a return receipt letter to Kathleen Sebelius who is the head of the Health and Human Services which included a copy of the rat study and my book. She sent me back to the National Cancer Institute via a letter with a suggestion to contact a particular nurse in the National Cancer Institute. I sent a book to the director of project Zero, a national coalition to recognize and help prostate cancer survivors. I received no reply. I believe that the only way for this dairy, the deadly killer, to be recognized and studied at the National level is for readers like you to help contact your senators and other National representatives to read my book ( I will provide it to them for free ) and start a ground swell movement to end this National epidemic and embarassing lack of response by those who have the resources and the strength to see this through. Thank you for reading about my difficulties. I promise you I will not give up. -Robert D. Bibb, M.D.

The Cancer Went Away

I want to describe for you today the results of a set of patients whose biopsy proven cancer of the prostate gland went away. I now have a significant number of men with a Gleason score of 6 or less on prostate biopsy whose cancer went away on a dairy free diet. These men were between 60 and 85, were all Caucasian and had a recent prostate biopsy which showed they had cancer. They completely avoided all dairy and any foods with dairy in them. Within six months their PSA had returned to normal. Those that had repeat biopsies revealed that the cancer was gone!

Keep it up!

I read the original copy of 'Deadly Dairy Deception' and found it informative and captiviting, which is what prompted me to write this review. In contrast to one particular 'Bum' from Myrtle Beach, I found the peer-reviewed science upon which this book was written highly convincing, or at least highly compelling. I would strongly recommend this book to anyone with an interest in the relationship between the cause and effect on our bodies of food we regularly consume. If you'd like to learn how dairy products affect your body, do not be misled by attacks on the character of the author (rather than attacks on the research upon which his conclusions are derived)... especially when they originated from a 'Bum'. Learn for yourself. Research. Form your own opinion. This book is a great starting point.

The Reviews Keep Coming

This is a very interesting scientific explanation for the problems associated with dairy. If you do your research you will find that many people across the country are pointing out the ills of consuming milk, which God made for baby cows - including Rev. Malkmus of hacres.com and Tony Robbins, a famous motivational speaker who is respected around the world. Even a calf is kicked away by its mom when it is time for the calf to consume grass. Cows do not drink milk. The following is from the link below.

Breast Cancer Can Regress on Estrogen Withdrawl

For those women who think that what I have written about dairy and regression of prostate cancer only pertains to men, have I got some news for you. Regression of breast cancer has been reported with withdrawl of estrogen replacement therapy. Think of what might happen on withdrawl of all dairy products in early breast cancer. This is with the knowledge that dairy is laden with estrogens. See link below: http://radiology.casereports.net/index.php/rcr/article/viewArticle/4/183

THE EPIGENETICS OF CANCER

Cancer is primarily an environmental disease with a smaller perhaps 20% being determined by genetic aberrations or mutations. If cancer is mostly environmental, then how does this happen? As it turns out there are very important genes in our cells that prevent them from becoming malignant. They are called suppressor genes. They can be turned on and off. When your body comes in contact with or ingests cancer causing agents such as IGF-1 and large amounts of estrogens in dairy, these protective genes are turned off by a mechanism known as methylation. The very scary part of this process is that the turned off genes can be passed on to the next generation in a turned off position. This would increase the next generation's risk of cancer by behavior in the previous generation. This is exactly what we see with breast and prostate cancer with ages dropping in each generation in which cancer occurs. This process of gene turn off and turn on is known as epigenetics. You are what you eat and you are passing on to your children an increased risk of cancer by consuming dairy before they are even born.

The rats prostate glands behave like humans.

I have earlier told you about the rat studies and how rats that were bred to have prostates that behave like humans developed prostate cancer after milk exposure. I will list another paper that will convince you that if these rats get prostate cancer from milk than so can humans.-Robert Bibb, M.D.

Good and bad estrogens

So what happens when we consume the high levels of estrogen in dairy products? Our bodies have enzymes systems to eliminate or restore the estrogen levels to normal. These same enzymes are used to eliminate toxins from our body. In our bodies one of the most potent estrogens in dairy can be converted to another estrogen called estrone.

The enzymes we are interested in are known as CYP1A1 and CYP1B1. If estrone is acted upon by CYP1A1 an estrogen called 2-hydroxyestrone will be crreated (2OH). This would be considered a good estrogen because when it binds to the estrogen receptor alpha it does not stimulate cancer. If the estrone is acted upon by CYP1B1 then an estrogen called 16 alpha hydroxyestrone will be created. This would be considered a bad estrogen because when it attaches to the estrogen receptor alpha, it can stimulate cancer. This attachment of 16 alpha estrone to the estrogen receptor alpha is also almost permanent and unremitting stimulation of the estrogen receptor alpha can continue.

In areas of prostate tissue, increased levels of the CYP1B1 enzymes have been found. See Ragavan,N. et al. "CYP1B1 expression in prostate is higher in the peripheral than the transition zone," Cancer Letters 215 (2004):69-78.-R.Bibb,M.D.

Prostate Specific Antigen

I talked early on in my blog about PSA and the fact that it exists in milk.
PSA stands for prostate specific antigen. Its increase over time (PSA velocity) is used as a measureto be suspicious if a man has prostate cancer and, therefore , whether he needs a prostate needle biopsy. PSA has a more sinister function. When insulin-like growth factor-one (IGF-1) circulates in the blood stream, it is usually bound to a binding protein. When bound to a binding protein it is not free to wreak havoc by causing cancer. It is the free IGF-1 that is involved in the cancer causing process.PSA is also an enzyme and splits IGF-1 away form its binding protein. This raises free IGF-1 to wreak havoc . So you have PSA in the milk you drink and your tumor produces PSA which act to increase free IGF-1 which in turn makes the tumor grow faster and this produces more PSA and the cycle continues. The home work for today’s blog is:

Insulin-like growth factor binding proteins (IGFBPs) as potential physiologic substrates for human

High Levels of Estrogens in Milk

We talked previouly about the estrogen receptor alpha which in our discussion is increased in both prostate cancer and breast cancer. Its stimulation by estrogens is implicated in development of these cancers. Dr. Lyndom Larcom of Clemson has already shown in the lab that estrogens markedly stimulate the growth of prostate cancer tissue. We know that women with estrogen sensitive breast cancer take Temoxifen to block the estrogen receptor alpha.

So should we be concerned about the high levels of estrogens in dairy? The answer is absolutely yes. Garcia-Pelaez and fellow researchers stated in a paper whose link will follow that they were concerned about the high levels of estrogens in dairy..

The verdict is in : Dairy Kills

Great Website:

http://knol.google.com/k/cancer-prevention#

Slow Death

I talked earlier about the two killers in dairy that accomplish the most harm in initiating malignancies of the prostate and breast. How is this accomplished? Almost everyone has heard of estrogen positive breast cancer. It turns out that for hormonally sensitive cancers such as those of the breast and prostate there are receptors or receivers of estrogen known as receptors alpha and beta.Generally, if you stimulate estrogen receptor alpha you can cause cancer and if you stimulate estrogen receptor beta you can decrease the chance of cancer. In a balanced situation or normal state you are likely to have equal numbers of alpha and beta receptors. During milk and dairy ingestion you are consuming high levels of estrogens and the growth facter IGF-1. This is a dangerous situation because this combination results in an increase of both the estrogen receptors alpha and IGF-1 which result in transformation of prostate and breast cancer tissue to become cancerous. As always, I will give you an important paper to read. Most of the scientific papers can be pulled up on Entrez Pub Med which is the scientific section of the library of Congress. The important paper for this post is: Estrogen action on the prostate gland: a critical mix of endocrine and paracrine signaling by Risbridger GP. et al. IGF-1 and Estrogens

I will now concntrate on the most likely candidates in dairy that cause cancer. They are estrogens and what is known as insulin-like growth factor one which is also known as IGF-1.Several researchers have looked at the correlation of serum IGF-1 levels and the incidence of breast and prostate cancer and have found a direct correlation between risks of prostate and pre-menopausal breast cancer with the higher levels of IGF-1. Milk and Hormones

Hopefully you have read the papers that showed that dairy can cause prostate cancer in an appropriate animal model. Why would that be the case? It is known that prostate cancer, breast cancer, ovarian and endometrial cancers are sensitive to hormones. Why should we worry about dairy products. Milk is made by cows for their calves. Milk is a hormonal delivery system for these calves. Grosvenor and others showed that milk contains many bioactive hormones and proteins. Among the hormones in milk are estrogens, testosterone,insulin-like growth factor, progesterone and PSA. Grosvenor et al can be accessed at:
